Southeast Collin County undergoing some big road projects
Southeast Collin County should see plenty of dirt moving on major road projects, as Regional Toll Revenue (RTR) projects begin construction or wrap up preliminary design and engineering phases for more than $200 million in improvements. Bottom line: more lanes are coming to handle growing traffic in the area.
For starters, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is managing four piggybacked projects to expand State Highway 78 in Wylie to six lanes over an 11-mile stretch, from the Dallas County line to FM 6. This $73.6 million project will bring a great improvement for drivers on this main artery in the southeast. One of the project phases is halfway finished, with the other three falling close behind.

Also, another major thoroughfare – U.S. 380 – is undergoing almost $70 million in widening efforts by TxDOT from Lavon Lake to Farmersville in three projects, one of which under construction with another to begin in the coming months. |
Two more TxDOT efforts are in the design approval process before more than $44 million in RTR funds going into widening projects: Murphy Rd. (FM 2551) will be widened to 4 lanes from FM 544 to FM 2514; and, FM 2514 will go from 2 lanes to 6 lanes, from Murphy Rd. to Country Club Dr (FM 1378). |
Down the road, on FM 1378, construction is underway to widen this two-lane stretch to 6 lanes from FM 544 to FM 3412 (Brown St.) for an estimated $3.2 million. A second project on FM 1378, from Brown to Parker Rd., should finish its $9.2 million expansion by next summer. |
To follow updates to construction in this area, please check our Projects pages under Regional Toll Revenue, a funding source from upfront monies paid out on the ongoing Sam Rayburn toll way project with the North Texas Tollway Authority (SH 121).
Don’t forget you can also monitor more than $15 million in 2007 Transportation Bond Projects for this same corner of the county, some of which have been completed or are under construction right now. These are sorted by city to make it easier to follow, or you can view our interactive map that links back to individual project listings and status updates.
