The Public Information Office’s main focus is to help the general public and media with access to open records and information on how our departments work and support the 35 elected officials within the county government framework.
Here’s a brief list of our functions:
- Oversee open records requests of county departments: Collin County maintains a vast storehouse of public records, most of which can be searched and found through our online services. For those records that aren’t online, visit our open records request page.
- Plan and implement public information programs countywide;
- Plan, design, write and edit news releases, newsletters, informational articles, pamphlets and brochures;
- Coordinate and conduct press conferences, public meetings and special events; and,
- Arrange tours of county facilities.
For the Media: We are the main point of contact for information and interview requests for the County Commissioners Court and the county departments that fall directly under their supervision. If you would like to receive our News Releases, contact us. You can also follow us on Facebook and Twitter.
Court Records: Judicial records of all types are typically open records, but do not fall under the guidelines of the Texas Public Information Act. They are maintained and protected exclusively by the District Clerk (for district court cases), the County Clerk (for County Court at Law cases) and the Justices of the Peace (for small claims, evictions, traffic cases, etc.) Judicial records must be requested and obtained from the clerks of these courts, not this office. Initial research to locate the proper court can be performed at our Courts & Cases indices in our Online Services section.
Police/Arrest Records must also be requested from the law enforcement agency that generated the report. For example, reports by Collin County Sheriff’s Deputies should be requested from the Collin County Sheriff’s Office; the same goes for records and reports created by Allen, Frisco, McKinney or Plano police departments.
Here are some other frequently sought county links and contact information for items that may not require a formal, open records request:
- County Clerk: land records (deeds), liens, business filings (assumed names), vital records of all types, cattle brands, beer and wine applications, foreclosure postings, military discharges, marriage licenses, and more.
- Tax Assessor-Collector: Property tax statements, vehicle registration.
- Public Notices: Public meetings, hearings, minutes, general announcements.
- County Checkbook: The first county check register made available online in the country, with information back to 2007.
